What types of young people do we specialise in taking on camps?

Reality primarily deals with young people aged 9 to 16 who are emotionally, behaviourally or socially disadvantaged. The young people are mainly known to social workers want to benefit from having a time away from their usual circumstances and surroundings, such as home, school, social circle, etc.

We are proud of the fact that we have developed a reputation for taking young people away on camps which many other organisations feel are too difficult to deal with.

Often we have young people who attend camp who may be affected by ADHD, Aspergers Syndrome or other behaviours that some organisations may deem to be 'challenging'.

Recently we have had an increase in enquiries about taking young people who are differently abled, such as being deaf. While Reality may be able to accommodate young people with more comprehensive needs, this must not be assumed.

Please contact our office to discuss if the person you wish to refer is suitable for an activity break, and if so, would they benefit from a weekend or week long camp. We will work with you as the referrer to put a young person on a camp where he or she will hopefully be able to make the most of the camp, the surroundings and the company he or she has.

As a referring agent, you must ask yourself, "Will this young person benefit from a Reality camp?"

We endeavour to make a positive difference in the life of every young person who attends a Reality camp, however, there are some young people who attend a camp who have no intention of making the most of the opportunity and as a result may be removed from a camp.

This is why it is key for referring agents to make an informed and conscientious decision that the young person they send will benefit from the Reality experience, rather than view the camp as an opportunity to simply get the young person out of the picture for a short time.

We deal with young people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds and treat referrals on a case-by-case basis. If you are in doubt as to whether a young person you wish to refer is suitable for one of our camps, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss it further.
