The Impact of Reality
At Reality we constantly assess the value of what we do. Here are some of our findings for the 2008 activities:
- 100% of young people have learned a new skill and have a certificate for this, excluding the few who left camp early
- 100% of young people have a certificate for “soft skills”, such as problem solving, supporting others, again excluding the few who left camp early
- 65% of young people’s feedback at home visits (made several weeks after camp) shows that they feel more confident
- 92% of families/referrers who responded, noted a positive change in the young people (for example, better relationships, positive leisure pursuits)
- 47% of referrers reported improved aspirations/life goals some time after camp.
An example:
In 2008 we trained four young people who had themselves been referred to Reality by their social workers, to become junior leaders. Two of these young people have now gone on to help at many week-long and weekend camps, and are now working with Reality as Project Scotland volunteers. They are developing leadership and planning skills which will equip them well for the future.
